The beauty of the Cinque Terre and surrounding land is undeniable. However, step onto any beach near one of the five towns and prepare for less sand than sun beds and tourists galore. Here we've rounded up some of our favourite secluded beaches in Liguria, where you can find some peace and quiet while still enjoying the stunning turquoise waters and Mediterranean flora.
Guvano is a beach with an interesting history, having been frequented by naturists since the late seventies. However, floods in the area in 2011 have made this beach almost impossible to reach other than by a somewhat treacherous path. This doesn’t take anything away from the charm of Guvano, especially viewed from the path that runs between Corniglia and Vernazza, where you will see a beautiful unspoiled pebble beach surrounded by typical Mediterranean plants and bordered by the stunning azure sea.
The Albana beach has been nicknamed “Rosse“ for the pale pink colour of the rocks that make up this beach. As with many of the more secluded beaches in Liguria, it can be reached by a path (this one starts out from Campiglia) but is much more accessible by boat. If travelling by boat, you might want to think about hanging around. There are few sights better than watching the sunset play off the shimmering rocks before sailing away to dinner.
A tiny beach nestled between Portofino and Camogli and reachable by boat or the winding paths that link the Cinque Terre, San Fruttuoso is perhaps the most frequented on this list. This is partly due to the fact a fantastic restaurant sits somewhat incongruously above the water, with views of a medieval Abbey that sits like an ancient guardian to the unspoiled beach. Not too far offshore, intrepid divers can catch a glimpse of Christ of the Abyss, a submerged statue with arms raised to the sun.
Favoured by locals, Il Canneto can be found between Punta del Cavo and Punta Castagna, near Riomaggiore. As you may have guessed, this particular beach is almost impossible to reach by foot, but this brings with it a real sense of achievement when you hop off your boat. A small spit of grey sand and pebbles, the real jewel of this beach is the small natural waterfall that feeds the ocean with fresh water, a true sight to behold.
